BBC Writes About the Buzzer

The BBC websites writes about the buzzer.

It is thought to be the headquarters of a radio station, “MDZhB”, that no-one has ever claimed to run. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, for the last three-and-a-half decades, it’s been broadcasting a dull, monotonous tone. Every few seconds it’s joined by a second sound, like some ghostly ship sounding its foghorn. Then the drone continues.
Once or twice a week, a man or woman will read out some words in Russian, such as “dinghy” or “farming specialist”. And that’s it. Anyone, anywhere in the world can listen in, simply by tuning a radio to the frequency 4625 kHz.
It’s so enigmatic, it’s as if it was designed with conspiracy theorists in mind. Today the station has an online following numbering in the tens of thousands, who know it affectionately as “the Buzzer”. It joins two similar mystery stations, “the Pip” and the “Squeaky Wheel”.

Thomson RT462 P Radio

For completion's sake, another radio from my collection - an early 2000s Thomson RT462 P radio.

It's an affordable cheaper consumer radio but still has a Shortwave band, and overall is pretty good on shortwave and FM in particular.

Features:
4 bands, MW, LW, SW, FM
Two-way speakers - good sound
Power: batteries and AC from the mains
FM: extended 64 to 108 MHz, including the Soviet / OIRT (64-74 MHz), the Japanese and European bands all in one.

A battery and cord storage compartment.

Overall, as I said, it is surprisingly good for the type, especially on FM.

Grundig Music Boy 50 RP 5200

Here is my Grundig Music Boy 50 RP 5200 radio.

A basic consumer radio, not a world radio by any means, but still has one SW band and is usable on shortwave (just).

Features:
Bands - 1 FM, 1 MW, 1 SW
Tone switch - music / speech
Power - batteries / AC
Tuning - analog scale
Collapsible antenna
Grip extension
Body - modern plastic

Can be used on shortwave but has very obvious limitations as it has a crammed analog tuning dial and no fine tuning. Still possible to get usable shortwave signal.

My Radios: 2011 Grundig S450DLX Field Radio

Continuing to catalog my radios and other related equipment, so this entry is on my 2011 Grundig S450DLX Field Radio.

However the review video below is only in Russian.

I intend to make a short video on it in English as well but later and if I do it'll be added to this post.

In the meantime, for those that don't have any Russian here's a description of Grundig S450DLX in English which I borrowed from universal radio.

The Grundig S450DLX Field Radio offers exceptional value and superior reception of AM, FM and international shortwave. Utilizing dual-conversion superheterodyne circuit design, it's powered by six D cells (not included) for exceptionally long play-time. It receives all shortwave frequencies, continuous from 1.7 to 30 MHz, covering all 13 international shortwave broadcast bands of 11, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 31, 41, 49, 60, 75 and 90 meters. You will get news and events from all over the world and superior reception of your favorite domestic AM and FM stations, including those often hard to pull-in AM talk shows. It's ideal for the AM DXing enthusiast too. There is a built-in sleep timer that automatically turns the radio off after 90, 60, 45, 30, 15, 10, 5 or 1 minutes so if you fall asleep the radio will not play all night long and run down the battery. A wide and narrow bandwidth switch allows you to narrow the radio's bandwidth to reduce adjacent channel interference. The main tuning knob may be set to fast tuning, slow tuning or lock. A new Quick Tune button allows you to quickly tune across the selected band. Independent Bass and Treble tone controls are featured. The medium wave [AM] step may be selected at 9 or 10 kHz via a switch in the battery compartment. Other features include RF Gain, 50 memories (10 per band), 12/24 hour clock, dual alarms, battery level icon, and selection of mono or stereo FM (stereo FM to earphone jack only). The rear panel has an F type antenna jack for external SW/FM antenna and there is a spring loaded terminal for MW antenna and Ground. Additionally there is an AM IF Output jack (F type). This is available for possible future accessory devices such as DRM or SSB decoders.
There is a built in telescopic antenna for FM and shortwave plus a built in ferrite bar antenna for medium wave [AM]. The right side of the radio has jacks for line level output and line level input, plus a conventional earphone jack. There are also slide switches for DX/Local antenna, External/Internal antenna. There is also a switch for key light on-off. With the key light feature turned on, the push button keys on the front panel will be back illuminated. Very cool for nighttime operation! With comfortable carry handle. Includes 9VDC AC adapter which plugs into the left side of the radio. Also operates from six D cells (not supplied). 12.2 x 8.5 x 3.8 inches.

Also, on this blog and on my Youtube channel you can find videos of this my 2011 Grundig S450DLX Field Radio in action on SW and FM.

Panasonic Stereo Radio Cassette Player RQ-SW88V

To go on with my catalog of own radio and radio related equipment, here is another entry about my Panasonic Stereo Radio Cassette Player RQ-SW88V Shockwave.

It does have a radio with an AM and FM band but it is primarily for listening to cassette tapes and it is pretty advanced as far as portable cassette players go.

It has a TPS aka tape program sensor which allows to fast forward or rewind by a specific number of songs (up to 3).

It also has a metal "heavy-duty" type shell.

In the video below I play some cassettes through my car stereo and show how you could use it to play cassette tapes in your car.

2007 Panasonic RQ-2102 Cassette Recorder

My cataloging of own radio- and radio related equipment goes on, with today's entry on my 2007 Panasonic RQ-2102 Cassette Recorder.

A brief review in this video on my Youtube channel.

It is a portable cassette recorder (and player) probably intended primarily for use a voice recorder, for recording speech or interviews.

But of course what's to stop you from playing music cassettes on it, if you have them, and I certainly still do.
